Raspberry Leaf
Historically, Raspberry Leaf has been used by many cultures over many time periods-which speaks to its value in women’s health. We know that Raspberry Leaf tones the uterus and pelvic muscles, although the information around this process is still unclear. Maybe it relaxes the muscles, or perhaps it makes them contract? The alkaloid Fragrine seems to be the main character in animal studies, but its exact mechanism eludes us. Antioxidants are the other big player in contributing to uterine health. Flavonoids, Tannins, Ellagic Acid and other polyphenols all work to protect cells and eliminate free radicals. Key Vitamins and minerals also work to promote a healthy uterus including Vitamin A, C, E, B complex, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium and Malic Acid.
Black Cohosh
Black Cohosh has a long history of use by Native Americans, primarily for its ability to treat menopause and PMS symptoms. A perennial native to Eastern North America, it is a favorite for treating the hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness associated with menopause. People also reach for this herb to help with the mood swings associated with PMS and PMDD. Contrary to popular belief, this plant does not directly increase or decrease estrogen. More likely, it works in serotonergic and opioid systems.
Cacao
One of the biggest benefits on cacao is its effect on blood flow to the brain. Cacao can greatly influence mood, memory, attention and processing speed. The compounds theobromine and phenylethylamine, as well as some precursors to serotonin have been known to greatly reduce symptoms of depression. The polyphenols and flavonoids in Cacao help the body to eliminate free radicals, reduce inflammation and decrease oxidative stress. Cacao also contains essential vitamins and minerals like potassium, copper, iron, zinc and magnesium. These minerals are often depleted in women and can lead to a really bad experience during luteal and menstrual phases. Zinc deficiency is proven to be a key factor PMS and PMDD. Magnesium, alone, can be so beneficial for inflammation, stress, fluid retention, and pain perception. Cacao just may be the most powerful thing a woman can take to supplement her diet.
