Aim to Nurture, Not Fix
What is it about this phase that makes it such a burden? Is it the mood changes? The sudden dip in energy? Is it the patience we had growing thinner? Hormonal fluctuations create so many undesirable effects and it happens like clockwork, of course-every single month. Although there is no “fix” to a natural process and this shouldn’t really be our aim. Maybe the right mindset and a few new habits can make the experience more fulfilling for us.

Natural Hormonal Processes
The Luteal phase is basically all about preparing the uterus for a potential pregnancy. After ovulation, the corpus luteum forms as a temporary gland inside the ovary. This gland produces progesterone and estrogen, thickening the uterine lining.
The aim of any new habit during luteal should not be to directly increase or decrease any specific hormone, nor should anyone fall victim to the idea that these hormones need to be “balanced.” The reproductive cycle itself is one of various hormonal fluctuations. You cannot and should not fight its very nature.

Main Goals
With this info in mind, we know that one of the main purposes of the luteal phase is to prepare the uterus for a healthy pregnancy-alternatively, to prepare the uterus for a smoother period of Menstruation. With this main goal in mind, we can partake in habits during the luteal phase which will help the natural process of uterine health and viability.
Raspberry Leaf
Historically, Raspberry Leaf has been used by many cultures over many time periods-which speaks to its value in women’s health. We know that Raspberry Leaf tones the uterus and pelvic muscles, although the information around this process is still unclear. Maybe it relaxes the muscles, or perhaps it makes them contract? The alkaloid Fragrine seems to be the main character in animal studies, but its exact mechanism eludes us. Antioxidants are the other big player in contributing to uterine health. Flavonoids, Tannins, Ellagic Acid and other polyphenols all work to protect cells and eliminate free radicals. Key Vitamins and minerals also work to promote a healthy uterus including: Vitamin A, C, E, B complex, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium and Malic Acid.
Black Cohosh
Black Cohosh has a long history of use by Native Americans, primarily for its ability to treat menopause and PMS symptoms. A perennial native to Eastern North America, it is a favorite for treating the hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness associated with menopause. People also reach for this herb to help with the mood swings associated with PMS and PMDD. Contrary to popular belief, this plant does not directly increase or decrease estrogen. More likely, it works in serotonergic and opioid systems.
Cacao
One of the biggest benefits on cacao is its effect on blood flow to the brain. Cacao can greatly influence mood, memory, attention and processing speed. The compounds theobromine and phenylethylamine, as well as some precursors to serotonin have been known to greatly reduce symptoms of depression. The polyphenols and flavonoids in Cacao help the body to eliminate free radicals, reduce inflammation and decrease oxidative stress. Cacao also contains essential vitamins and minerals like potassium, copper, iron, zinc and magnesium. These minerals are often depleted in women and can lead to a really bad experience during luteal and menstrual phases. Zinc deficiency is proven to be a key factor PMS and PMDD. Magnesium, alone, can be so beneficial for inflammation, stress, fluid retention, and pain perception. Cacao just may be the most powerful thing a woman can take to supplement her diet.
